• Everything You Need to Know About the Expansion of the NFSB Thrift Shop

Summary: Nutley Family Service Bureau has expanded Thrift Shop operations into a second location across the street from the original. Local shoppers can purchase a larger inventory of gently used, pre-owned items at affordable prices. All proceeds from Thrift Shop sales support the organization’s programs and services. In this article, we discuss the new location, what shoppers can expect, and why thrifting is thriving.

On October 16, 2025, after months of planning and the tireless efforts of Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) staff, volunteers, and community partners, we officially opened the second location of the Thrift Shop!

“People love the new store,” said Peg Conca, Director of Retail Operations at NFSB. “They love the look, they love the way merchandise is organized and presented, and they love that there are no steps! It has a traditional boutique feel from the moment you see it as you walk down the street. It’s a very bright, inviting store.”

The new location at 160 Chestnut Street in Nutley adds 1,600 square feet of retail space to the 1,100 square feet of the original Thrift Shop, which is directly across the street at 169 Chestnut Street.

Both locations are open seven days a week:

    • Monday to Friday: 10 am to 8 pm
    • Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm
    • Sunday: 11 am to 4 pm

More retail space means more inventory to sell, more merchandise available to the community at deeply discounted prices, and more funds raised for NFSB programs and services that are desperately needed in our community.

More retail space also means more volunteers are needed to staff both locations. If you’d like to volunteer at the Thrift Shop, please stop by or fill out an application on the NFSB website!

What You’ll Find at Each Thrift Shop Location

The original location of the Thrift Shop sells mostly home goods and housewares, utensils, dishes, pots, pans, decorative items, and constantly changing inventory of seasonal items throughout the year.

The new Thrift Shop location primarily sells clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, jewelry, and small furniture. High-end fashions, collectibles, and other sought-after merchandise are sold on the Thrift Shop’s eBay store.

Our team also announces Designer Drops on social media every Thursday at 5 pm, items change weekly. We’ll highlight new merchandise from brands like Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Coach, Betsey Johnson, and Tory Burch, just to name a few – so you can shop for designer looks at Thrift Shop prices! Both locations have special sales every week. We also offer Gift Certificates for all your thrifting family members and friends! Now that is a unique gift!

“Whether you need practical, everyday items like silverware and dishes, or you’re looking for a unique outfit from a designer brand for a special occasion, we have it at the Thrift Shop,” Peg said. “We’re very excited to more than double our available inventory at very affordable prices, all while raising money to support NFSB programs including mental health services and the food pantry.

    Why Is Thrifting Thriving?

According to the 2025 Resale Report from Thredup, thrifting for apparel is expected to grow nearly three times faster than the rest of the retail apparel sector between now and 2029, with GenZ and Millennials making up a large portion of shoppers. Research has shown similar trends in many categories, not just apparel.

    Why is this happening?

    • Affordability. There’s not much the average person can do about things like inflation and health insurance costs. One thing we all can do is seek out opportunities to buy secondhand. Estimated cost savings when shopping at thrift shops rather than buying new are 50-90%!
    • Sustainability. No new environmental resources are used on apparel, household items, and other merchandise that already exist. Purchasing pre-owned items extends a circular economy that keeps items out of landfills, reduces pollution and material waste, and conserves energy, water, and other natural resources.
    • Uniqueness. You’re far more likely to find items that have not been mass produced when you visit a thrift shop rather than a big box store or even most online marketplaces. Secondhand items are often one-of-a-kind attention grabbers and conversation pieces!
