While demand for mental health services in New Jersey reached an all-time high in 2025, a shortage of licensed counselors and psychiatrists has made it difficult for many individuals to access the care they need.
Despite these trends, Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) offers immediate appointments for mental health counseling without long waitlists. However, more work needs to be done to meet demand in the Nutley area and surrounding counties.
To continue meeting the needs of our community, NFSB is excited to welcome Susan Reyna, MSW, LCSW as Director of Outpatient Services. In this role, she manages the mental health program and supervises all outpatient clinicians and the advanced practice nurse (APN).
“We often encounter clients who are experiencing housing insecurity, food insecurity, clothing insecurity, and other hardships,” Susan said. “The fact that we can help the whole person through the Food Pantry, Thrift Shop, and case management is very unique to NFSB. There’s a genuine sense of community, a family vibe, that puts clients at ease. I’m very grateful to be part of such a special organization and team.”
Susan will lead the growth of NFSB’s mental health outpatient services while developing the school-based program in partnership with Nutley Public Schools.
“We want to create and strengthen partnerships in the community,” Susan said. “We believe this will help us serve more people and eventually offer group therapy services as we have in the past. At the moment, we offer Spanish-speaking therapy, but I would love to expand that to different languages.”
NFSB’s longstanding partnership with Nutley Public Schools has grown and evolved into a school-based program that offers individual and family therapy, crisis intervention, school clearance and reentry planning along with other services.
“We have a clinician embedded in the schools so students have direct access to treatment and support,” Susan said. “It’s important for students and families to be able to see a familiar face if they’re dealing with bullying, anxiety, or a crisis situation. We also plan to offer educational workshops for students and families. It’s an amazing partnership we have with Nutley Public Schools, and we hope to offer similar services to other school districts.”
If school clearances and reentry planning are needed after a student’s hospitalization or mental health treatment, the NFSB school-based clinician and APN will complete the required documentation and coordinate these efforts with school staff. This will ensure the student returns to school safely with proper support and continuity of care.

Prior to joining NFSB, Susan served as Director of Outpatient Behavioral Health Services at Hudson Regional Health and Clinic Director at Forge Health. She has extensive experience in clinical operations, program development, and executive management, which will be instrumental as we move toward our 2026 goals.
As a bilingual therapist, Susan has treated children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of settings, including partial hospital programs (PHPs), intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), residential, nonprofit, and community-based outpatient programs. While pursuing her master’s degree, Susan worked as a behavioral tech in inpatient psychiatric units and provided case management services to clients facing serious challenges, including opioid-dependent pregnant women.
Susan earned her Master of Social Work from Rutgers University and Bachelor of Science in elementary education and teaching from The College of New Jersey. She also holds credentials as a Certified Clinical Supervisor and a Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI)-certified field instructor. Susan is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, gambling treatment, and the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy (Levels 1 & 2).
“I’ve always been passionate about helping people,” Susan said. “Everyone at NFSB collaborates and works well together. They work hard to help our clients, but they also look out for each other. It’s a family atmosphere that extends to our clients, which helps us earn their trust and make such a difference in people’s lives.”
